Each of our children gets $10 cash every Sunday.

I’ve been teaching our son (6) the different ways he can direct his money: save, spend, give and invest.

We found a 3-part “bank” on Amazon that he uses to divvy up between save, spend and give.

He invests at “Bank of Mommy” in a separate jar and I double his investing dollars every 2 months. (My next lesson is ✨dividends✨ with coins every month. 😁)

I prefer teaching them personal finance principles with cash because the physical bills help with
👉🏽 counting practice
👉🏽 clear visuals of how money is separated
👉🏽 blessing the homeless in person a bit easier

Other aspects of teaching them money:
🔹I don’t tie their allowance to chores. Chores are how we maintain a clean home and the work is divided because we’re a team.
🔹I do anticipate giving them “bonus money” based on academic performance starting in 3rd or 4th grade.
🔹We love using games like Monopoly Junior to teach them about renting/owning.
🔹I teach them about taxes by taking a bit of their candy on Easter and Halloween 😂

How to build your financial fortress ⬇️

👉🏽 Direct every dollar you earn. When you also budget a buffer (aka checking account cushion), you give yourself a bit of wiggle room. This safety net can “catch” slight overspending or small unexpected expenses.
👉🏽 Don’t transfer personal spending money early in the pay cycle. This is less of a priority than that unplanned flat tire or forgotten annual credit card fee, and it should be treated as such. Move this money only when you’re in the clear.
👉🏽 Set up savings buckets for costs that you DO anticipate - things like home maintenance, car maintenance, back to school, travel, etc. When an unplanned cost pops up, it might just fall under one of your savings buckets anyway. Kitchen faucet giving you trouble? Pull from the home maintenance bucket. Child’s backpack broke? B2S is an excellent fit to cover that.
👉🏽 Your emergency fund is your highest priority savings effort. Gradually grow it by contributing money every pay cycle. Strive to save 3-6 months of necessary expenses in your emergency fund.

Set these up and you’ll be amazed at how much better you’ll sleep at night 😌

Mental health & money It’s been almost 6 years

Mental health & money

It’s been almost 6 years since I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder.

Depression and anxiety consistently attempt to threaten my financial journey. Therapy has helped me master techniques to weaponize rather than succumb to my mental illness.

The struggle is ongoing, but these 2 methods deserve recognition:
🔹 Budgeting to combat anxiety
Budgeting is calming and freeing for me. I’m immediately reminded of the control I have in how I earn, give, invest and spend money.
🔸 Opposite action to combat depression
This is quite difficult, but it’s highly effective. When I feel sad, I often want to isolate. But I want my hands to be busy in my isolation 😩 so my typical response would be to buy something new (usually crafts). I also tend to order food for delivery far more often when I’m depressed. Opposite action helps me “turn the volume down” on the sad/numb emotion by acting in opposition to it. I invite my kids to help me cook. I chat with my husband or my mom to keep impulse in check.

I’ve accepted that Eeyore and Tigger are here to stay. 🤣 They are a reality.

But they’re not an excuse.

I refuse to lose. 👑
