Imagine having a setup like this instead:

Your paycheck and cash tips land in a checking account specifically used to house your variable income, and you “pay yourself” from that account to cover your bills & spending.

When income is high, extra funds go to a savings bucket. If you have a slow month and income is low, you can supplement your pay with what’s in savings.

You don’t have to worry about adjusting your spending to match the paycheck, because your paycheck is now a consistent number paid at a consistent tempo. Your budget sees the same figures every time.

👉🏽 Income Savings: the account you’ll add money TO when income is high, and pull FROM when income is low

And I don’t blame you. Much of the content centers on deprivation (though they’ll never use that word), or working towards financial goals one at a time, or pinching pennies to make ends meet.

But I want to give you a fresh perspective and demonstrate the power of a plan when income isn’t your shortfall.

Budgeting isn’t about deprivation. It’s about intention.

You CAN multi-task your money.

With the right template, you realize that a budget is the organizational tool you need to reach the next level.

Emotion can & WILL influence your direction. But

Emotion can & WILL influence your direction.

But you cannot let emotion take the wheel on its own.

Emotion-led finances look like:
😣 impulse purchases
😣 cash-hoarding/oversaving (yes there is such a thing)
😣 spending to fill a void

At a minimum, know the numbers. If emotion overpowers the math, yet going that emotional route still keeps you on course to tackling financial goals… press forward confidently. Own your choices and remember that you’re allowed to change your mind later.

More examples:
🔹Should I take the $100,000 job with more schedule flexibility or the $150,000 job with a strict schedule? $150K helps us buy that new house sooner…but I want to be there for all of our kids’ extracurricular activities. ☹️ I can’t get that with the higher paying gig. Both jobs would help our family thrive. Both jobs get us to retirement before 55…

You decide to take the $100K role.

🔹Should we take the vacation or put the $7K into our kids’ 529s? We’ve been so stressed lately and the vacation will help us relax and recenter. But $7K will grow to $12,500 after a decade…

You decide to take a less costly vacation and invest the difference for the kids.
